Education

New York University (NYU) 2011-2013 Dual Master of Arts in: Educational Social Studies & Educational Theatre Sarah Lawrence College 2003-2007 Bachelor of Arts, Concentrations in Political Science/History, Film, and Theatre I have been an educator, theatre/film professional, and academic in New York City for the past eight years. My intellectual and educational focus has been on finding the intersections between the arts and scholastic forms of political engagement. It is my belief that History, Theatre Studies, and Literature all have complementary aspects that enrich and enliven each of these seemingly disparate disciplines. My goal as an educator is to teach students empathic means of understanding through this interdisciplinary approach. It is my ultimate goal, in any academic or artistic teaching role, to inspire students to become lifelong learners. I find that my span of teaching disciplines, from the particularities of teaching math to the free form expression of creative writing or the arts, generally inform and enrich each other. I've been told by struggling math students that I am able to convey math in a manner that is engaging and meets the student at their speed and skill level rather than forcing the student to try and conform to my speed or approach. On the other end, I approach reading comprehension and essay writing with an eye to producing tangible results- be these in the form of test scores or completed student works. By adjusting instruction to the individual needs of students, getting students engaged with an easy going attitude, and challenging students in a manner that motivates them to achieve for their own sake, my approach to tutoring is one of self-empowerment and student ownership of their own process. I was trained by Kaplan in 2007 and taught for them in the greater Westchester NY area for a year and a half. During my time with Kaplan I began as an SAT teacher and found that I would consistently stay with students after class and discuss various colleges and strategies for their applications. After a few months of teaching Kaplan decided to hire me on as a student adviser and later also as a marketing assistant; these positions allowed me aid my students through the entire process. I found this process to be quite rewarding and have continued in this capacity in my private practice. As a founder of the Brooklyn Tutoring Collective I guided students through every step of the college application process and had a 100% success rate of students attending four-year institutions. I am equally versed in the Math, Critical Reading, and Writing aspects of the SAT I. I also have been trained in, and subsequently taught, the ACT, GRE, SSAT, ISEE, SHSAT, SAT II US History, and SAT II Literature. My initial SAT scores from high school: Verbal: 800 Math: 670, and I have since retested and proved my math competence with an average score of 780

Hobbies

After graduating from Sarah Lawrence college I jumped headfirst into New York City's Film and Theatre industry. To subsidize the inconsistent income of the 'starving artist' lifestyle, and to keep myself intellectually active I began tutoring and soon found I had a passion for teaching. After several years I came to realize that, while I enjoyed aspects of the frenetic art world, I could see myself settling down and teaching fulltime. I still am participating in the arts as an actor, director, and film editor, though less often in professional capacities. I also enjoy playing softball, and am glad to return to my roots to cheer on my Baltimore Orioles!
